Be Selfish

What do I mean “be selfish”? Isn’t selfishness a mortal sin? That answer depends on how selfishness is defined. In recent years, I am discovering that selfishness is necessary for me to live a more fulfilling life. I am talking about taking time to care of myself.

With no apologies, I have taken a couple weeks away from this blog site. Why do I do that when writing is a passion of mine? Quite simply, I need to take care of myself. Sometimes life depletes a person, takes more energy than one has to give. Then it is time to step back and re charge physically, emotionally and spiritually.

When that happens to me, I remind myself it is good to say no to external forces that drain my energy. For instance, I love my grandchildren and adore spending time with them but there are times when I must say no when they want to come over. I have been sick these last couple weeks and could not care for them.

What’s The Point?

I believe that I cannot care for others if I do not take care of myself. When I overextend, then I tend to get sick. Sometimes, I sacrifice time and energy for a good reason. My daughter is single and had a baby three weeks ago. Of course, as mom and grandmother, I saw her through labor and delivery, post delivery complications and getting my granddaughter home during a time of extremely cold and windy weather.

The cost to myself was enormous but the need was great. I got sick and had to take time out to recover.

I am sharing this with you because I believe that most people confuse self care with selfishness.

My advice? If you are feeling depleted, drained or exhausted go ahead and be selfish. Get rest and recovery so you are better able to take care of the ones in your life that need you. I dare you to be selfish.
