Our Need For Community

As I finished attending a two day author’s conference, I was reminded how we all need community to thrive. We had a small group of about 15 people total. We spent two days talking about the structures and content of our book ideas. The most amazing dynamic took place when we walked into the conference as strangers and left as a bonded group of new friends.

As a community we will spend the next 6 months helping each other finish our book projects.

The Benefits Of Belonging To A Community

The primary benefits to this author’s group is we will receive almost immediate feedback, gentle corrections and help getting “unstuck” when we are having difficulties with a text. In addition, we now have friends from other states and countries with access to each other through our slack group. Also, we learned about wine testing and whiskey judging!

Although it was a very diverse group of authors, we were all there for a common purpose, with common interests. The energy in the room was upbeat and positive. Immediate feedback was welcome and energizing as new thoughts and ideas helped people hone their focus on their book topic and content.

Most importantly, there is strength in numbers. Fifteen minds had more ideas than one. When we allow ourselves to be vulnerable, we experience the best that community has to offer.

Where to Find Community

If you do not belong to a community, I strongly urge you to find a place to experience the benefits. You could join a book club, gardening club, a play group for your kids or churches can be a source of community. Find a hobby group and join, just do what is fun for you. Everyone deserves a chance to experience community where you can relax and enjoy the company of others.

Studies show community, getting out of your house if possible, is a good way to fight depression, anxiety and may be a tool for fighting off the development of Alzheimer’s disease. My challenge to you is to find a community to join and attend at least once a week. You may find the benefits outweigh the time or money you spend to be a part of that community.
